Amidst the global pandemic and continuing Coronavirus crisis in Brazil, Bangladesh Embassy in Brasilia-DF observed and celebrated the Glorious Victory Day 2020 with patriotic zeal and solemn enthusiasm on December 16, 2020. The celebration was attended by Brazilian journalists and members of academia from reputed Universities and schools in Brasilia. Representatives from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry and the Distrito Federal Governor’s office, members of the Diplomatic core, and the Bangladeshi diaspora participated in the event.
Recognizing the singular contribution of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation, as the architect of Golden Bengal and the real hero of the 1971 Liberation War, Ambassador Md. Zulfiqur Rahman formally inaugurated the Bangabandhu Memorial Library and unveiled the Bangabandhu Corner in the Chancery, as part of the Embassy’s elaborate plan of work related to the yearlong Bangabandhu Birth Centenary program (2020-2021). This public diplomacy endeavor would undoubtedly broaden the knowledge about both Bangabandhu and Bangladesh in Brazil and would play a significant role in further strengthening and deepening the bilateral ties between the two countries.
Through continued efforts of the Embassy the University of Brasilia (UnB), one of the prestigious academic institutions of Latin America, has in principle agreed to establish Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Chair at UnB. They are also going to translate “Unfinished Memoire”- a masterpiece by Bangabandhu himself, into Brazilian Portuguese and publish the same in the UnB press. Both public diplomacy endeavors along with the inauguration of the Bangabandhu Library were highly appreciated by the journalists and the academia as a fascinating and incredibly useful tool for the UnB faculty/students and independent researchers in comprehensive geopolitical as well as socioeconomic understanding of this region in the global context.
The day began with the Flag hoisting ceremony with National Anthem of Bangladesh and remembering the millions of freedom fighters who laid down their lives to liberate Bangladesh as an independent nation from the Pakistani forces in 1971. Ambassador Rahman placed a floral wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the nation, accompanied by the Embassy family and the guests. A highly informative discussion segment participated by the Embassy officials reminisced the nine-month long war of liberation and touched on the genocide and atrocities committed against the Bangalees by the Pakistani army and their collaborators.
Ambassador Zulfiqur Rahman in his remarks enlightened the Brazilian audience about the emergence of Bangladesh as well as the singular contribution of the Father of the Nation in the independence of Bangladesh. He greatly appreciated the gesture of the audience for the gracious presence at the event despite the pandemic and aggravating COVID-19 situation in Brazil.
The Victory Day Celebration ended with a cultural segment participated by the children of the Embassy family.
