1- Please explain to our readers the situation in Greece today, about Covid-19

Given the severity of the pandemic, the situation in Greece today is much better than we have hoped for: 2.506 certified cases, 134 deaths (47 women), mostly all having underlying chronic health conditions, with an average of 74 years of age. These results were highly praised by international press (among others, please see Facebook link: “Greece in Brazil – Grécia no Brasil”).

2- Did the government managed to deal with this crisis in a positive way?

Yes, most positively, due to three critical factors: firstly, from day one, the health of the general population was put above economic factors, secondly, the pandemic was dealt with exclusively on expert advice and, thirdly, the overwhelming support of the public opinion to the Government, which helped the latter to put in place restrictive measures.

3- Do the greek people accept the government rules in a pacific way?

Greek people are raised with a culture of “human proximity” and are highly “outgoing”. It is not unusual for Greeks to go out for dining or clubbing at 12 or 1 o’ clock at night, even on weekdays. Therefore, it was extremely difficult, emotionally and psychologically, for the population to adjust to the new realities. But, against all odds, Greek people abide without any grievances to the measures, since they deem these measures to be proportionate and necessary.

4- Please give us an ideia of when this beautiful country will be open for tourism again.

Already we have passed the peak of the decease and the Government is planning to gradually relax the measures, always taking into account the suggestions of the experts, to avoid a potential resurgence. We expect the plan to be announced early next week (5.5.). The plan will definitely include specific actions for Tourism, in order to safeguard the health of both tourists and Greeks.

However, there is no doubt that Greece is and will remain one of the safest places for vacations worldwide.

5- Please feel free to make your own coments about the pandemic in Greece.

Some remarks:

-Greece is situated between two countries severely hit by the pandemic, unfortunately. Italy and Turkey. Therefore, it takes extra care to protect itself by a possible contagion of the virus. Especially regarding Turkey, which is continuously trying to ship illegal migrants and refugees to Greece in an attempt to extract benefits of all kind from the European Union, we should be extremely vigilant and prepared.

-Due to the recent economic crisis, the National Health System was not very well equipped. The pandemic “helped” to reorganize the System, both in infrastructure and professionals and is now in a much better position to face pandemics, or any other kind of emergencies.

-All employees of the private sector receive a monthly allowance of 800 euros. The pay roll of the public sector is disbursed normally. There is in place a loan and subsidies plan of the Government to help businesses to cope with the crisis. In parallel, deliberations are taking place in the framework of the European Union to decide on a general plan of reconstructing the European Union members Economies.

-The pandemic resulted in a, not unusual for Greeks, repeated display of solidarity: for example, business people, professionals and common people offer products and money in a large scale, doctors and nurses work around the clock, music artists give free internet concerts. From all walks of life, a reborn sense of “togetherness” is observed, which undoubtedly will benefit the Greek society in the long run.
