The Brazilian former president , Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was found guilty of corruption and money laundering yesterday and sentenced to about nine and a half years in prison, Lula was a politician who has wielded enormous influence across Latin America for decades.
The case against the Ex Presidendent lider of the labour party of the country (PT),stemmed from charges that he and his wife illegally received about around one million in improvements and expenses from a construction company for a beach front apartment next to São paulo. Lula was the man who raised Brazil’s profile on the world stage as president from 2003 to 2010.
Prosecutors said, Lula was able to obtain lucrative contracts from Petrobras, the state-controlled oil giant.
His conviction tarnishes the legacy of one of Brazil’s most commanding political figures, a charismatic leader who grew up poor, challenged the military dictatorship and nurtured global ambitions for his nation, helping to land the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
Lula made a lot of differences in the Country ,he is admired by many people but has a strong oposition among the high society and rich. these charges on him seems unfair for many citizens of Brazil, as there many politicians acused of worse and deep envolvelment in cases of corruption and are not charged guilty or gone to jail.
Finally Lula is not going to jail straight away and is going for another judgment as the brazilian laws works .
